It can be spotted from afar, with its massive silhouette and characteristic blue colour: the strap lift is one of the Port of Concarneau – CRN’s emblematic pieces of equipment. Capable of lifting vessels of up to 400 tonnes, it plays a central role in the site’s dry docking and ship repair operations.

Equipment adapted to large dimensions

The Port of Concarneau, Construction et Réparation Navales, a port of the Brittany Region, has four handling facilities for removing ships from the water: a trailer dock, a boat lift, a dry dock and the strap lift. The latter operates on a 12-metre-wide dock, with a flexible strap-lift system that is perfectly suited to a wide variety of vessels.

The local private dry ports (CN Diffusion, Marée Haute) can accommodate boats up to 15 metres long, with a draught of 2.10 m or 20 tonnes. Beyond that, the lift takes over. For example, it can handle

  • Large multihulls (catamarans, trimarans),
  • Wooden, aluminium or steel yachts, which are generally heavier,
  • Deep-draught yachts.

The vast majority of sailboats are taken out matted, with a systematic check of the rig’s compatibility with the strap hoist.

A keel pit, integrated into the dry dock and equipped with several floor heights, allows work to be carried out at man-height on both the hull and the keel. It is equipped with adjustable floors, suitable for all types of work, from sails to bulbs.

All types of vessels, all types of work

With its 400-tonne capacity and open design, the lift can handle a wide variety of vessels:

  • Passenger transport,
  • Classic or heritage boats,
  • Old riggings,
  • Fishing vessels,
  • Government vessels (maritime police, surveillance launches, etc.),
  • CTVs (Crew Transfer Vessels for wind farms),
  • Pontoons or specific structures such as floating docks.

The maximum width depends on the dock, but can be widened in some cases with the help of the tide. The length will depend on the structure of the vessel.

The Carenco team in charge of operations has extensive experience in handling ships of all sizes and origins.

Highly responsive Ship Repair Area

Responsiveness is one of the service’s major assets: depending on availability, a boat can be taken out of the water in just a few hours. Once dry, it is parked on the Naval Repair Area (ARN), a secure 22,000 m² area accessible only to professionals and closed outside opening hours.

Owners or shipowners are free to carry out the work themselves or to call on the many professionals on site. A number of services and facilities are available:

  • Water supply,
  • Electricity (220V single-phase, 380V three-phase),
  • Sanitary facilities (including PRM, from October),
  • Covered areas (hangar, technical containers, etc.).

A dedicated paint hangar

In addition, SAEN offers a 700 m² covered hangar, located directly on the ARN. It accommodates ships or parts of ships for specific operations such as stripping or painting. It is mainly intended for boats that are loaded via the lift.

The strap lift is an essential link in the ship repair chain at the Port of Concarneau, Shipbuilding and Ship Repair. Versatile, fast and suitable for a wide range of vessels, it demonstrates the port’s ability to meet the demands of maritime professionals.
